Chapter 53: The reception of guests

  1. “Every kindness is shown to them”(RB 53.9). For me that is a powerful phrase. “Every kindness” does not mean just some kindness, and not what I feel like doing or not doing. Every kindness comes from an open heart that is attentive, and compassionately available. The Oratory(RB 52) in my heart where I already practice receiving Christ, now extends to daily life and receiving others. It means letting go of “human measurements” and “barriers”. “Benedict wants me (us) to let down the barriers of my soul (our souls) so that the God of the unexpected can come in.” (Chittister, The Rule of Benedict, p.229). In other words , I have to get out of my comfort zone and move into uncharted waters, stretching my boundaries for the unknown, the Unknown. The underlying current for me is trust, trust in myself and trust in Christ and trust in Love.
