WCCM Oblate Blog: Reflections from Daily Reading of the Rule of St. Benedict

WCCM Benedictine Oblates are encouraged to read a designated portion of the Rule daily, and to write a brief, personal response. I hope that this blog will support our Oblate community in this practice. Please, keep blog entries brief and in a first-person ("I") voice. Refrain from discussing, offering an opinion, or commenting on other entries. Simply consider how a particular section of the Rule is speaking to you in your present circumstances.

Chapter 7: The value of humility (paragraphs 6-7)

As to pursuing our own will we are warned against that when scripture says to us: turn away from your own desires; and in the Lord's prayer itself we pray that his will may be brought to fulfilment in us. (From para. 6 of Ch. 7 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry OSB, 1997.)

In the practice of saying the mantra, I learn to turn away from my own will. Fr. John teaches me that this is the way of poverty of spirit, leading to purity of heart. When my heart is finally pure, the Lord's will may also be mine.

"Thy will, not mine, be done", How this little prayer that I say daily so goes against my arrogant brain, Abba. Silly me! How readily I forget Elizabeth Barrett Browning's reminder: Your ""[God's] plans put [my] man's best dreams to shame."
