Chapter 63: Community order (paragraphs 2-3)

In that way they will conform to scripture which says they should try to be the first to show respect for each other. (From para. 2 of Ch. 63 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry, OSB, 1997.)

Benedict helps me to realize that when I greet another with sincere respect, I experience a largeness of being, a sense of being in good order.

  1. This part of the Rule reminds me to be more conscious about giving "sincere respect" both to the young and old (to include my superiors and bosses in the office). If I can give the "gift of smile" to those deserving and undeserving, maybe it will be wonderful to start giving the "gift of sincere respect" to all.

Thank you Sis Mary for sharing the term "sincere respect." It simply reverberates in my heart.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you too for this blog. Since last year I was trying (though inconsistently) to reflect on the Rule of St. Benedict. But there were times when I completely don't understand what I read. So when I found out about your blog, I felt so blessed because I just have to look at your reflections ... to understand the depths of St. Benedicts teachings.

Thank you so very much and may you have a very blessed Christmas!
