The first step of humility sounds to me like nothing less than pure attention -- continuous prayer. And humility is appropriate here, because to be in that prayer is to begin, and to begin again, every time I falter in the practice of meditation.

You invite me to abide, Abba, here, now, in you. As Jesus said so awesomely: "I am the vine, you are the branches . . . ." You tell me that I am a living extension, a living part of you. What awesome intimacy! And you fortify that intimacy by inviting me to accept.the nourishing gift of twice daily meditation.
