Chapter 73: This Rule is only a beginning

Whoever you maybe, then, in your eagerness to reach your Father's home in heaven, be faithful with Christ's help to this small Rule which is only a beginning.
(From para. 2 of Ch. 73 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry OSB, 1997.)

Benedict encourages me and inspires me, but he doesn't instruct be to be perfect.  Only faithful.

  1. In Exodus 18:18, Moses' father-in-law speaking to Moses with advice says to him, "For the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone." I cannot "do it alone", that is live fully in Christ. I have the gift of the John Main meditation practice and then through him the Rule of Benedict so that I am not alone but have a community for assistance and guidance and direction.

  2. For me,a meditator, the Rule is a necessary tool. I could get lost in my own rationale that I am doing enough by sitting in meditation. The Rule calls me into community to bear out in my daily life what the heart discovers in silence.
