Prologue to the Rule (paragraph 3)

Let us open our eyes to the light that can change us into the likeness of God. (From para. 3 of Prologue to The Rule of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry, OSB, 1997.)

May I wake up now, and open my eyes to the light of a unifying consciousness, a realized heart.

  1. “Come, My children, listen to Me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord” (Ps. 33[34]:12). I felt like the Lord is gently calling, inviting me to learn “appropriate fear” – fear of separation from Him. Oftentimes, in this confusing world I suffer “misplaced fears.” Thus, this invitation for me to come near, closer, be with Him in meditation so that I will learn … and be wise.

  2. The early Christians summarized their faith and hope by declaring, in wonder, that “God became man so that man might become God”. Today, now, in that same wonder, the silence, stillness and simplicity of the work of meditation opens my eyes to “the light that changes [me] to the likeness of God.”

  3. I am reminded to stay awake for God's light surrounds me; me stay awake or I will live in my own shadow
