Chapter 18: The order for reciting the psalms (paragraphs 1-2)

Each hour begins with the following verse: O God come to my assistance, O Lord make haste to help me. (From para. 1 of Ch. 18 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry, OSB, 1997.)

My heart so deeply resonates with the exact same verse that Cassian recommends for continuous prayer, and that Benedict recommends to begin each monastic hour.  Maranatha, come Lord Jesus!

  1. Each time I read the verse "Oh God come to my aid, Oh Lord make haste to help me," I can still vividly recall the first time I heard this being chanted by the monks at the Monastery of Transfiguration in Bukidnon City, Philippines. This was just simply carved in my heart. In fact, when I am too tired or too weak to pray, this verse is my prayer.

  2. This is the verse that draws me to prayer like a magnet throughout the day everyday

  3. With these words I admit I do not know how to love, nor what love truly is. It is fitting, then, that I ask for help from Love Himself, not once but as many times as the need presents itself throughout the day and night.
