Chapter 6: Cherishing silence in the monastery
I am guarded about the way I speak and have accepted silence in humility refraining even from words that are good. (From para. 1 of Ch. 6 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry OSB, 1997.)
Benedict points out to me that a selfless silence is my teacher.

ReplyDelete"Pause and think before putting mouth in gear": another bit of wisdom from one of my mentors echoes Benedict here. Through the silence of my twice-daily Meditation, Abba, you help me to improve my listening ability, to respond to people and situations with a bit more mindfulness. Peace and inner serenity begin when I take a few moments to connect with you in silence before I open this too often opinionated mouth of mine.
