Chapter 42: The great silence after Compline

Silence should be sought at all times by monks and nuns and this is especially important for them at night time.
(From para. 1 of Ch. 42 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry OSB, 1997.)

I usually can't control when silence occurs in my family. But when I can bring them the gift of my heart full of silence, perhaps they are touched by the potential of silence.

  1. Thinking of Spring and the sun, Silence is very much like the sun. Out of the dark ground, green shoots are showing themselves. Being silent, allows growth from the inside out. Silence allows God to work in me, " Whom no limits can contain," not even closed, dark earth places of my soul.

  2. My home is silent a great deal of the time. However my interior self is not as silent as I would like. Meditation helps to bring the silence.
