Chapter 38: The weekly reader

Then after Mass and Communion the reader should ask for the assistance of the the prayers of all the community to ward off the spirit of pride in the performance of this task.
(From para. 1 of Ch. 38 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry OSB, 1997.)

In my experience with others, honestly acknowledging my egoism is a pretty good way of diminishing it.

  1. I ask my self, why do I at times find it so difficult to ask for prayers? It may just be that it is the pride/ego shouting at me. Let go!!

  2. This chapter on the the weekly reader comes before the chapter on the proper amount of food. I was struck how these two chapters back to back are like the two parts of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. I break open the Word of God and I receive the broken bread. I am nourished with both. How rich are the variety of ways that I am fed by God who has taken great care to see that I receive both.
